Privacy policy

This policy explains what personal data RaceFeed collects when you use racefeed.io, why we collect it, who we share it with and the rights you have over it.

Who we are

RaceFeed is run as an independent motorsports news website. In this policy “we”, “us” and “our” mean RaceFeed. You can contact us about anything in this policy at [email protected].

What we collect

When you read the site. You can read RaceFeed without giving us any personal data. We measure visits with Plausible Analytics, which we host ourselves. It does not use cookies, does not store IP addresses and does not track you across sites; it only gives us totals such as page views, referring sites and countries. Our hosting provider also keeps short-lived server logs, including IP addresses, to run and secure the service.

When you comment. We collect the display name and comment you submit, and your email address if you choose to give it. We also keep a one-way, keyed hash of your IP address to limit spam and abuse. We never store your IP address itself, and the hash can’t be turned back into it.

When something goes wrong. If the site hits an error, we record technical details such as the page, browser and device type and what went wrong, using GlitchTip, an error tracker we host ourselves.

When you email us. We keep your email address and anything you tell us so we can reply.

How we use it and our lawful basis

  • Publishing and moderating comments: your display name and comment, which are shown publicly once a moderator approves them. Lawful basis: legitimate interests in running a discussion section.
  • Telling you about replies: if you give your email address, we use it only to let you know when someone replies to your comment and, if needed, to contact you about your comment. It is never shown publicly, sold or used for marketing. Lawful basis: legitimate interests, and you can ask us to stop at any time.
  • Preventing spam and abuse: the IP hash and the spam check described below. Lawful basis: legitimate interests in keeping the site safe.
  • Understanding and fixing the site: anonymous analytics and error reports. Lawful basis: legitimate interests in improving the site.
  • Answering your messages. Lawful basis: legitimate interests in replying to you.

Where we rely on legitimate interests, we have checked that they are not outweighed by your rights and interests.

Cookies and similar technologies

RaceFeed does not use advertising or tracking cookies. Your light or dark theme choice is saved in your browser’s local storage, and staff who sign in to edit the site get a login cookie. Both are strictly necessary, so we don’t ask for consent for them.

The comment form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to check that you are human. It runs only on pages with the comment form and sends Cloudflare your IP address and some browser details to do that check.

Some articles include videos or posts from YouTube, Vimeo, X, Instagram, TikTok or Bluesky. They don’t load until you press play or “Load post”. Once you do, that platform receives your IP address and may set its own cookies, under its own privacy policy.

Who we share it with

We never sell your personal data. We use these service providers to run the site, and they may process it for us:

  • Vercel hosts the website. Our site runs in its Frankfurt, Germany region.
  • Bunny.net stores our database, including comments, and serves images, from Frankfurt, Germany.
  • Cloudflare provides the Turnstile spam check on the comment form.
  • Spaceship (Spacemail) provides our email, including messages you send us and reply notifications.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the rights and safety of RaceFeed, its readers or others.

International transfers

Some of our providers are based in, or may access data from, outside the UK, including the European Union and the United States. Where personal data leaves the UK, we rely on UK adequacy regulations or appropriate safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

How long we keep it

  • Comments, including your display name and email address, are kept for as long as RaceFeed is running, unless you ask us to delete them.
  • The IP hash on a comment is deleted after 30 days. The separate record we use for rate limiting is deleted after one day.
  • Error reports are deleted after 90 days.
  • Emails you send us are kept for as long as we need them to deal with your message.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

  • ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • ask us to correct data that is wrong
  • ask us to delete your data, including your comments
  • object to how we use your data, or ask us to restrict it
  • ask us to transfer your data to you or someone else in a common format

To use any of these rights, email [email protected] from the address you used, or tell us the display name and article you commented on. We will reply within one month. Exercising your rights is free.

Children

You must be 18 or over to post a comment. We don’t knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has given us their details, email [email protected] and we will delete them.

Security

The site uses HTTPS throughout, comment email addresses and IP hashes are visible only to our staff, and access to our systems is limited to the people who run RaceFeed.

Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, please contact us first at [email protected]. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The latest version will always be on this page, with the date it was last updated at the top. If we make a significant change, we will make it clear on the site.
