No reason. Not illness. No further comment.
That's about all Haas said on Saturday morning, a few hours before final practice at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Esteban Ocon is out of the Mexico City Grand Prix. Reserve driver Ryō Hirakawa takes over the VF-26 for FP3, qualifying and Sunday's 71-lap race, and at 32 he'll make his Formula 1 race debut.
The team's statement read: "TGR Haas F1 Team reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa will replace Esteban Ocon for the remainder of the weekend's Mexico City Grand Prix, Saturday 31 October - Sunday 1 November."
Then came the line everyone noticed. "No further statements will be made at this time."
A follow-up from the team ruled out illness. So what's left? The Race said what most of the paddock was thinking: Ocon looks to have been benched.

A Friday to forget
Ocon's weekend began on the sidelines. Hirakawa drove his car in FP1 to cover the rookie practice requirement and finished 15th. Ocon got one session, FP2, and ended up 13th, ahead of team-mate Ollie Bearman.
The lap times weren't the story. The radio was.
Haas moved a planned high-fuel run from softs to mediums because of the condition of Bearman's tyres, and Ocon pushed back to race engineer Laura Mueller. "Still doing soft, right?" he asked. After the session he walked back to the Haas hospitality unit with his helmet still on.
Not the body language of a happy driver.
Publicly, Ocon kept things measured. After FP2 he said "Ryō did a good job and collected some valuable data" (via MotorBiscuit). Less than 24 hours later, Hirakawa had the seat for the rest of the weekend.

Déjà vu from 2024
If this sounds familiar, you're not wrong. In 2024 Alpine stood Ocon down before the season finale in Abu Dhabi and put his successor, Jack Doohan, in the car. Ocon then moved to Haas. Autosport pointed out the parallel straight away.
The setup in 2026 is almost identical. At the end of September Haas confirmed Ocon would leave when the season ends, with Ferrari junior and F2 points leader Rafael Camara taking his seat in 2027. Hirakawa was one of the drivers Camara beat to the drive.
Ocon didn't accept the decision quietly. At Sepang he insisted "The reason wasn't my performance." Team boss Ayao Komatsu responded by pointing to the "overall picture" and calling the decision "a time to make a change". In the same breath he praised Ocon's pace and called him one of the fastest drivers on the grid when everything comes together.
Even so, the numbers favour Bearman. The Englishman sits 13th in the drivers' standings on 23 points, with Ocon three places behind. Autosport understands Ocon, now 30, is likely to become Aston Martin's reserve driver in 2027.
Who is Ryō Hirakawa?
The newcomer in the second Haas isn't a typical rookie. His CV:
- 2017 Super GT champion in Japan
- Two World Endurance Championship titles with Toyota, in 2022 and 2023
- Le Mans 24 Hours winner in 2022
- Haas reserve since 2025, a role tied to Toyota's technical partnership with the team
- F1 practice outings for McLaren, Alpine and Haas since late 2024
Hirakawa has talked about an F1 race seat for years. Now he has one, at a day's notice, at a circuit more than 2,000 metres above sea level, where thin air puts cooling and power units under real strain. One practice session and qualifying stand between him and the grid. No pressure, then.

His team-mate has his own questions to answer. Crash.net reports Bearman hasn't signed a new deal for 2027, and Komatsu has rejected stories about the youngster's wage demands.
What happens in Brazil?
Nobody outside the team knows. Haas won't comment on its line-up for São Paulo, and Motorsport Week noted the statement doesn't say whether Ocon returns. Camara is the only driver officially signed for next season.
For now, Ocon's car belongs to someone else. Again.
