Rafael Camara was supposed to wait until 2027. He won't. The Brazilian will make his Formula 1 debut at his home race this weekend, after Haas confirmed Esteban Ocon will not drive for the team again this season.
Twelve months early. At Interlagos. Not a bad way to start.
The São Paulo Grand Prix runs from 6 to 8 November at Interlagos. The 21-year-old Ferrari junior will partner Ollie Bearman in the VF-26.

How Ocon's exit came early
Ocon's departure was never a secret. Back in September, the Frenchman posted on social media his Haas stint would end with the 2026 season (Agora RN). Nobody predicted the door would shut before the season was out.
Mexico City changed the picture. Haas stood Ocon down for the race weekend and gave his car to reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa. The Japanese driver finished tenth and picked up a point, according to TV Guararapes. Decent work for a stand-in.
So why the axe? Haas won't say. Team principal Ayao Komatsu called the decision firmly in the team's best interests, adding "such decisions are never made lightly". He kept the conversations behind the call private.
Reports have filled the silence. French daily L'Équipe suggested something physical happened between Ocon and Komatsu, a claim Ocon denied, as F1Maximaal reported. Neither side has gone on record with a full account.
Why not keep Hirakawa in the car? Scheduling. His World Endurance Championship commitments got in the way, per Grande Prêmio. Camara, already signed for 2027, was the obvious pick.

Who is Rafael Camara?
Short answer? The fastest driver Haas tested. On 15 October, Haas announced Camara would race for them on a multi-year deal, saying he was clearly the quickest in a shoot-out test for the seat (Reuters).
The test took place at Portimão in Portugal from 26 to 28 August. His rivals were no pushovers either. Komatsu said Camara won the seat on pace in a shoot-out against Jack Doohan, Ryo Hirakawa and Leonardo Fornaroli, and summed up the verdict as "He [Camara] was the quickest, very simple answer" (GPblog).
His junior record backs the stopwatch up:
- 2024: Formula Regional European Championship title
- 2025: F3 champion in his debut season (Yahoo Sports)
- 2026: left Baku with a seven-point lead at the top of the Formula 2 standings (F1.com)
One more detail for the anoraks. Camara has already picked number 50 for his 2027 campaign, since his first choice, five, belongs to Gabriel Bortoleto. Whether the 50 appears on the car this weekend is unconfirmed.

What to watch at Interlagos
- History. Camara becomes the 34th Brazilian in Formula 1. With Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto also racing, Brazil gets two home drivers in the same race on home soil for the first time since 2016.
- Stakes for Haas. The team sits among the midfield outfits scrapping for sixth in the constructors' standings (F1i). Putting a rookie in the car mid-fight is a gamble.
- More seat time. Brazilian outlets report Camara will also race in Las Vegas, with Hirakawa back in the car for the final rounds (Vavel Brasil).
- Sponsor news. Personal backer Bradesco is expected to announce a 2027 deal with Haas on Thursday, possibly active from Interlagos.
My view is Haas lose very little here. You get a rookie with no pressure for results, on a circuit he knows, in front of fans who will roar at every overtake. Bring the car home in one piece on Sunday and his 2027 preparation starts five months ahead of schedule.
As for Ocon, a race winner and four-time podium finisher has left Haas through the back door. The question now is where he lands for 2027, if anywhere.
